A family pet died in a fire last night on Meadowlark Loop.

Lafayette Firefighters were called to the 100 block of the Lafayette street last night just after 9 p.m.

When they arrived, the firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the house. Crews went inside and found the kitchen and laundry room on fire. They had the fire under control within 15 minutes, but there was heavy smoke and fire damage in the house, a spokesman said.

The homeowner was able to get out, and told firefighters the blaze started in the kitchen. Two dogs were in the house, and one died, the spokesman said.

The fire is under investigation.
