A collection of model planes now call the Lafayette VA Clinic home.

The family of George T. Mayer, a Navy Veteran and native of New Orleans, donated his World War II model plane collection on Monday. The family says they wanted local veterans to enjoy the model planes which depict over 66 models used during the war with extensive detail.

George Mayer passed away in March 2019 and his family says that he wanted other veterans to be able to appreciate the planes many of which are over 50 years old.

Mayer enlisted in the Navy and served on the Destroyer USS Gainard (DD706) during WWII earning the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. He was a draftsman by trade, but a true artist with everything he did with his hands, according to his family.

In 1976, Mr. Mayer and his family moved to Lafayette. He built many unique furniture pieces for family and friends, but model planes and woodworking were his passion.
