The Cardiovascular Institute of the South as established an endowment fund for nursing students at South Louisiana Community College.

CIS says that the endowment honors the late Michael McElderry, who provided cardiovascular care to the Acadiana community for nearly 30 years.

The scholarship was created to support qualified nursing students with tuition, fees, uniforms and supplies.

The CIS scholarship investment will be leveraged for one-to-one matching funds from the Louisiana Board of Regents through its Support Fund program for Two-Year Workforce Scholarships, according to CIS.

"Cardiovascular Institute of the South is a critical workforce partner of South Louisiana Community College, and we are proud to partner with CIS for clinical rotations of our nursing students," said SLCC interim chancellor Dr. Vincent June in a press release. "Through this investment, CIS is adding yet another layer of support to the industry's pipeline of high-quality nurses into the local workforce."

The first award(s) for the endowment is expected to be made in Fall 2021.

CIS says that Practical Nursing and Registered Nursing students at SLCC with a 3.0 GPA or higher will be eligible to apply for the scholarship.
