Lafayette deputies are investigating a possible case of cruelty to animals.

Deputies say they received a call about an animal crate floating in the river near Beaver Park.

When deputies arrived, they realized a deceased dog was inside the locked crate. The dog is believed to be a 1-2 year old Pitbull. Investigators checked to see if the dog had a collar or any identifying markers, including whether or not it was microchipped, but nothing was found.

They are working on getting the crate onto land and will launch an investigation into what happened. Animal control will dispose of the remains.

Detectives are hopeful someone will come forward with information on what happened. If you recognize the crate pictured above or have knowledge about a missing dog matching this description, please call the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office at 337-232-9211. The investigation remains ongoing.

This is a developing story. Check back later for more information.
