The D.R.E.A.M.S. Manufacturing Company hosted a Halloween event Saturday to celebrate National Disabilities Month.

The event featured free samples of sweets, smoothing, and meat pies from the D.R.E.A.M.S. company.

"In October, Americans observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month by paying tribute to the accomplishments of the men and women with disabilities. From mild to profound, individuals who have disabilities work in the community and keep the nation's economy strong. By observing National Disabilities Awareness Month in October and really, any time of the year, it reaffirms the commitment to ensure equal opportunity for all citizens across the United States," comments Donielle Watkins, Executive Director of D.R.E.A.M.S. Foundation of Acadiana.

The company was created by the D.R.E.A.M.S. Foundation to create jobs for individuals with special needs in the Lafayette area. The pies are made from scratch by 24 individuals; 21 of them have special needs.

"Employees love seeing their meat pies sold that they've made. The community loves to come out and support us and the other kids that participate in our foundation love to see their friends," explained Donielle Watkins, D.R.E.AM.S. of Acadiana Director. "It gives us a chance to do all of that."

Vendors were located throughout the company parking lot for social distancing. Costumes were encourages. Some stations were set up drive-thru style for those who wished to remain in their vehicles.
