SCOTT, La. - Break out the King Cake and get ready to catch some beads; carnival season officially starts Monday, January 6.

The City of Scott is also gearing up for the Mardi Gras season. City officials raised a flag to mark the beginning of the holiday. They also say the annual parade serves as a celebration of community.

Carnival season begins Jan. 6, celebrated by many as Epiphany, the day the three wise men arrived to see the baby Jesus. Carnival comes from the Latin words meaning "farewell to the flesh," and Fat Tuesday was originally the day when all remaining meat and fat had to be eaten before Ash Wednesday ushered in Lenten fasts.

Between now and Ash Wednesday, parades will take place in about 150 cities and towns statewide.

Fat Tuesday will be Feb. 25.
