The City of Broussard has approved funds for the first phase of their downtown redevelopment project.

At the November 10, 2020, meeting, the Broussard City Council adopted an ordinance to amend the 2020-21 operating budget to allow up to $2.4 million to be spent for the Main Street – Phase 1 – South Bernard Road to Clara Street Project.

The plan for the first phase, is the result of a public charette held last year. Those open development meetings were held from June 3 through June 6 of 2019.

The City of Broussard, with assistance from the Lafayette Economic Development Authority (LEDA), engaged the services of B&A Planning Group to coordinate the charrette to develop a master plan for Broussard’s Main Street and historic downtown.

The process included sessions with public officials, consultants, stakeholders, landowners, and the public to produce a vision for development.

Duplantis Design Group (DDG) presented their preliminary plan for Phase 1 to the council at the October 27 meeting.

The City of Broussard says that Phase 1 improvements will happen along Main Street, from South Bernard Road to Clara street and will include major drainage improvements along with an entry gateway structure and welcome signage. A 10-foot-wide concrete path for walking and biking, benches, trash receptacles, new lighting, bicycle stations, commemorative markers and other signage, ornamental trees and landscape beds are also planned.

“I want to thank the City Council for their approval and funding of the first phase of this landmark revitalization project for downtown Broussard,” says Broussard Mayor Ray Bourque. “This is the first step to not only complete much-needed infrastructure improvements but also to create something that will be beautiful and of economic benefit for our city. A legacy that will benefit generations to come.”

The project is currently in the engineering phase, with work scheduled to begin in early 2021. The details of Phase 1 construction can be found in the Downtown Broussard Master Plan: https://www.developbroussard.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/C2266-Downtown-Broussard-2020-02-28LR.pdf.
