A local church is warning parishoners about a scam operating in the name of the church.

The message, posted on the Facebook page of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Carencro, says the scammers are using the names of priests and the bishop to try to steal money from the faithful.

"Our Parish Office has received reports of email requests for assistance/money/gift cards allegedly from Fr. Ledoux and Fr. Comeaux. We also understand the Diocesan Chancery has received email requests for the same from “Bishop J Douglas. Deshotel" from a fake account. If you receive a message from Fr. Ledoux, Fr. Comeaux, Bishop Deshotel or any cleric, church employee, etc., requesting a follow-up email for more details and/or assistance in purchasing anything and especially gift cards DO NOT comply. It is a scam," the message states.

The Diocese of Lafayette says they are having a real problem with this scam.
