Carencro announced Wednesday that the city's water metering system is being upgraded.

The city says the upgrade will include cellular technology and software that will enable customers to view water usage and receive leak alerts.

Officials say they have partnered with Utility Metering Solutions (UMS) to upgrade the water metering system and implement a state-of-the-art advanced metering (AMI) solution.

The work will begin this week. The entire project is scheduled to take approximately four months to complete.

Carencro officials say that in most cases the transition will be completely transparent and will not affect customers.

Work will be performed during normal working hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Customers will be notified by door hanger once the work has been completed.

More information is said to be coming soon on how the city's water customers can monitor water usage with a customer portal.
