LAFAYETTE, La. - The Kiwanis Club of Acadiana awarded students that brought up their grades for the nine-week period at Michael Middlebrook Elementary (formerly Plantation Elementary) on Friday.
The Kiwanis B.U.G. (Bring Up Grades) Program awards students that bring up their grades from one nine-week period to the next in a specific subject and at the end of the year. There are also SUPER B.U.G.S, which is when a student raises their grade in every subject from one nine-week period to the next.
Kiwanis members and Principal Hermann went to each class and individually present B.U.G. certificates to those students that earned them.
At the end of the school year, an ice cream party is held in the school cafeteria with every student that earned a B.U.G. certificate during the year. Every time a student earns a B.U.G. certificate during the year, their name is placed in a hat and prizes are given out at the end of the school year.
According to Brady Mouton, B.U.G. Program Chair, "Kiwanis of Acadiana has been doing B.U.G. at Middlebrook Elementary for many years now and to see the look on a student's face when we call out their name is what Kiwanis is all about. We start with third grade and by the time the students reach fourth and fifth grade, their passion and focus to receive B.U.G. certificates is so evident. Kiwanis provides the motivation for students to strive to learn and work hard. I have been a Kiwanian since 1999, and their faces when you call out their name is truly a KIWANIS moment."
