LAFAYETTE, La. - A local member of Boy Scout Troop 162 is collecting school supplies for children in Haiti.

As a part of earning the rank of Eagle Scout, Caden Ardoin is working on a project to collect the supplies for Respire Haiti, a non-profit based out of Lafayette that provides educational and health care services in Gressier, Haiti.

Ardoin's project will directly benefit more than 500 students enrolled at Respire Haiti Christian School many which come from restavek situations, child slavery or domestic servant, and have experienced some level of trauma abuse and hardship in their lives. According to Respire Haiti's website, restaveks are usually between the ages of 4 and 15. They usually do all of the household chores, i.e. cooking, cleaning, washing, and fetching water. Unfortunately, they are often abused and most likely do not go to school. The school and organization provides these students with the necessary emotional, physical and mental support they desperately need.

Ardoin has donation boxes set up at the following locations in Lafayette from July - August:

  • CVS - Guilbeau & Johnson
  • General Office Supply - 3045 W. Pinhook Road
  • Oppurtunity Machine - 537 Cajundome Blvd.Suite 111
  • St. Edmond Catholic Church - Ambassador & Congress
  • The Learning Tree Daycare - 215 W. Brentwood
