Barricades for Rio parade go up this week

The Lafayette Police Department has released the dates that drivers in Lafayette will see barricades placed on roadways in the city ahead of the Rio Parade on Saturday.

Barricade placement is set to begin on Thursday, February 13, 2020, starting at 8:00 am

The barricades will be placed by Public Works along the first half of the parade route from E. Simcoe Street at Jefferson Street to E. Vermillion Street at Johnston Street. Partial road closures will occur during that time, according to police.

On Friday, February 14, 2019 starting at 8:00 am., barricades will be placed along the second half of the parade route from Johnston Street at E. Vermillion to Cajun Field. Partial Road closures are also expected during this activity.

The Rio Parade is set to roll at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday February 15, 2020.

This parade will start at Jefferson Boulevard and Simcoe Street.

The krewe will travel to Jefferson and Chestnut Streets and turn right onto Chestnut Street and proceed to Third Street. It will turn left onto Third Street and then Third Street will change into West Congress Street.

The parade will continue on West Congress Street to Lafayette Street. It will turn left at Lafayette Street, continuing on before turning left onto West Vermilion Street towards Johnston Street. The parade will turn right on Johnston Street and travel south until it reaches South College Road. It will turn right onto North College Road and go to Gate One at Cajun Field and end.

Street Closures:

Jefferson Boulevard and Simcoe Street to Jefferson Boulevard and Evangeline Thruway will be closed 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Surrey Street from Louisiana Avenue to Jefferson Boulevard will be closed at about 3:00 p.m.

The following streets will be closed at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday February 15, and will remain closed until the parade is completed:

  • Chestnut and Third Streets to Vermilion and Johnston Streets
  • Johnston Street from East Convent to Cajundome Boulevard

These streets may be closed sooner if necessary depending on crowd size.
