The Lafayette Fire Department says that 19 storage units sustained heavy fire damage during a two-alarm fire at the Life Storage rental facility Thursday night.

Firefighters were called to the 2800 block of the NE Evangeline Thruway at around 5:23 pm on January 14 to a report of smoke coming from one of the storage units.

The department says that witnesses placing items in a nearby unit noticed the smoke and flames coming from one of the units and called 911. The witnesses also used a fire extinguisher in an attempt to put out the fire but the door to the unit was locked.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they say that multiple storage units were on fire.

Emergency crews immediately called in a “second alarm” requesting additional firefighters to assist in suppressing the fire. The two-alarm blaze resulted in a response of 53 firefighters and 10 fire apparatus.

After 30 minutes of battling the fire, the department says that first responders were able to bring the flames under control. Once the fires were extinguished, 19 storage units sustained heavy fire damage.

Emergency crews remained on scene for 4 hours, the department says.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation
