UPDATE: The suspect in a November officer-involved shooting has died, State Police confirm.

The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations is assisting the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff's Office to investigate a shooting incident involving a JDPSO deputy.

The incident happened November 27 at about 9 a.m. at a house off La. 101 north of Lacassine. Deputies were called to a report of shots fired inside the home.

Shortly after arrival, officers encountered 56-year-old Jeffery Smiley holding a weapon outside the residence. Smiley was directed to drop the weapon but refused. At least one deputy discharged his weapon, striking Smiley.

Smiley was transported to Lafayette General Medical Center for treatment, but he has died from his injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The investigation remains ongoing and active, troopers said Thursday.
