A vigil took place in New Iberia on Wednesday night honoring the life of a New Iberia Senior High School student killed nearly three weeks ago.

Family and friends gathered outside of NISH to remember Garron Lewis.

Garron was the son of Iberia Parish School Board member and former New Iberia Councilman Raymond "Shoe-Do" Lewis.

Lewis, who was 17 years old, was shot and killed on August 16. According to police, he was found dead in a vehicle that was parked on Audry Street at its intersection with Rene Street.

Lewis invited all Acadiana high schools to the vigil. He hoped the vigil would help heal the community as he says many area students are still grieving the loss.

Students say they wanted something special to be done for Lewis.

"We all kind of talked as a whole...we didn't want it to be swept under the rug and him not be remembered."
