A well-loved BBQ pit at Iberia Medical Center that was recently restored was put to good use Friday.
CRNA Richard Howell II and Director of Surgical Services Chuck Dawson set out to make the pit, which Howell says has been a fixture of the hospital for around 30 years, usable once again. It had seen better days, Howell said, so he put out a call on social media asking for someone who could make a few on-site repairs. A few local companies answered that call and restored the pit to its former glory. It was returned to Iberia Medical Center at the end of January.
Howell said he started the restoration process in hopes of using the pit to cook for the hospital's Operating Room staff as a reward for their hard work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Friday, that goal was achieved when Howell and Dawson cooked a full menu and served more than 70 plates to hospital staff and those who helped restore the pit.
On the menu was BBQ chicken, BBQ pork steaks, BBQ sausage, rice dressing, bakes beans, and garlic butter french bread.
"All frontline workers really want in the midst of all this uncertainty and chaos is to know that they are appreciated and that they are doing a great job with what has presented itself. I sure hope that was the message received today," says Howell.
Howell adds that he and Dawson wished they could have feed more people, but hope to hold similar events again in the future.
