The City of Jeanerette has chosen a new Chief of Police.

On Monday, the Board of Alderman interviewed five candidates for the position in executive session. At the end of the meeting the board voted, selecting Dusty Vallot as the new chief.

Vallot says that he is excited about the process in helping "rebuild the department from the ground up."

"To get it where it should be and needs to be and over time, working along side the mayor and board members, we are going to get that accomplished," Vallot said.

The Chief of Police position has been vacant since August 2017, when the city council fired then chief Jeffrey Matthews.

Since that time, City Marshal Fernest "Pacman" Martin has served as the city's interim police chief.
