A St. Martinville man has been identified as the victim in a fatal motorcycle crash involving a school bus Friday afternoon in Iberia Parish.

Spokesperson for LSP Troop I Thomas Gossen says the crash happened along La 182 at La 88, near Coteau Road.

45-year-old Shane Lacour was driving a motorcycle east on La 182, and at the same time, a school bus driven by 81-year-old Maudry Kennedy, turned left onto La 88 off of La 182. Once the bus made the turn onto La 88, the bus stopped before proceeding to cross the railroad tracks, as required by state law. The rear end of the bus had not fully cleared the intersection, causing the motorcycle to strike the right rear side of the bus.

Lacour suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Kennedy was properly restrained and was not injured. Troopers say that three students were on the bus at the time of the crash, all of whom were uninjured.

Kennedy, who showed no signs of impairment, did submit a voluntary breath sample which indicated no alcohol in her system. A toxicology sample was obtained from Lacour for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.

KATC reached out to Iberia Parish School Superintendent Carey Laviolette who says that the school system's transportation supervisor was headed to the scene. Details on the incident were not yet available.

Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles and are more difficult to see. Drivers are asked to pay attention behind the wheel and to always watch for motorcycles.

Troop I has investigated 54 fatal crashes resulting in 59 deaths in 2020.
