Juneteenth celebration starts three day event in Jeanerette

A three day event in Jeanerette kicked off with celebrations held on Juneteenth.

New Chapter Push and Iberia Christian Ministerial Federation is hosting the weekend event in the parish. On Friday, the organizations held a Juneteenth Celebration and Black Lives Matter rally which began at 3:00 p.m.

The event ran until 5:00 p.m. which included a balloon release. A revival began at 5:00 pm.

Over the weekend several other events will be held.

Organizers say starting on Saturday there will be a children fun day from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm. A revival will begin at 5:00 pm

On Sunday, June 21 there will be a Father's Day Celebration beginning 2:00 pm to 3:45 pm . With a revival at 4:00 pm.

"It's always good to teach children their heritage so they'll always know what leaders did, what black Americans did before. So, once you know your history you can live better," Dr. JoAnna Rochester said.
