In Iberia Parish, Friday is the first day of a new school year and the first day one school has ever been open to students.

Belle Place Elementary will welcome students coming from Dodson and North Lewis Elementary. Superintendent Carey Laviolette says this new school has all the bells and whistles.

Ahead of the first day, The New Iberia Police Department is reminding the residents of the parish that schools will open starting Friday August 9, 2019 and officers will be actively working school zones.

They are reminding motorists that when approaching a school zone slow down. "The few seconds you may save speeding through a school zone is not worth the fine, but more importantly, it's not worth the life of a child," a press release from the department states.
