NEW IBERIA, La. — On Wednesday, May 24, 2023, New Iberia Police responded to the 1000 block of South Iberia Street in reference to a shooting.

According to Captain Leland K. Laseter, a male victim was shot and transported to the hospital in critical but stable condition.

We spoke to one local resident who witnessed the entire incident and even helped the victim before paramedics arrived.

"He was afraid. He said, 'Please don't let me die.' I said, 'We're doing all we can to help you and the ambulance is on the way,'" Ruby Lopez, a New Iberia resident, told KATC.

"I said, 'Just stay as calm as you can,'" Lopez continued. "I gave him breathing instructions, I said 'Just breathe, keep breathing and try to calm down, that way you won't bleed' and he listened and he was cooperative but he was scared."

We will provide updates as they become available.
