An organization created to provide help to struggling families donated backpacks and school supplies for students at Jeanerette Middle School.
8th grade ELA teacher Sarah Olivier says she began asking for donations for students and teachers over the summer in order to get materials ready for the start of the school year. Olivier says that she held a garage sale to raise funds and also requested help from the community.
One group,Mims Family Matters, heard her call for assistance and donated all the supplies for Olivier's class and others. The group even donated backpacks and supplies for the entire middle school.
The supplies were handed out during 7th and 8th grade orientation on Thursday morning.
Olivier says it will be a surprise to students that will surely make a great start to the new school year. Corlice Mims who runs the Family Matters organization provided a list of sponsors who helped make the donations to students possible.
