13 arrested in contraband investigation out of Iberia Parish Jail

NEW IBERIA, La. — The Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office announced more than a dozen arrests have been made in connection with an investigation into illegal contraband being transported into the Iberia Parish Jail over the summer.

IPSO states in a release that on July 16, it conducted a joint operation with the Louisiana State Police to begin an investigation into illegal contraband being transported into the Iberia Parish Jail.

As a part of this investigation, on July 26, 2020, several Iberia Parish Jail inmates were found in possession of a cellphones, marijuana and synthetic marijuana.

The following inmates were charged:

Markell Davis(age 22, Patterson, LA) :

  • LARS 14:402 – Contraband in Correction Center

David Arceneaux (age 26, New Iberia, LA):

  • LARS 14:402 – Contraband in Correction Center (2 counts)
  • LARS 40:966.A – Possession with Intent Schedule 1
  • LARS RS 40:982 – Second or Subsequent Offense

Jaquan Johnson (age 23, New Iberia, LA):

  • LARS 14:402 – Contraband in Correction Center (3 counts)

Ferontay Sigure (age 19, New Iberia, LA):

  • LARS 14:402 – Contraband in Correction Center

IPSO says that on Aug. 19, it conducted an undercover operation into the illicit trafficking of contraband into the Iberia Parish Jail involving the IPSO Special Investigations Unit, Iberia Parish Jail Investigators and IPSO Bureau of Investigations and IPSO Patrol Division.

IPSO was also assisted by Louisiana State Police Criminal Intelligence Unit and Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Agency.

IPSO states that this is part of a much broader investigation and further arrest are expected in the immediate future.

The following were arrested and charged:

Jude Daniels (age 22, New Iberia, LA):

  • LARS 14:26 – Criminal Conspiracy
  • LARS 14:24-402 – Principal to introduce contraband into penal facility (X3)
  • LARS 40:966A.1 – Possession with Intent to Distribute Sch I
  • LARS 40:982 – Second or Subsequent Offense

Dean Sam (age 28 New Iberia, LA):

  • LARS 32:52 – No Driver’s License
  • LARS 14:26 – Criminal Conspiracy
  • LARS 14:24-402 – Principal to introduce contraband into penal facility
  • LARS 14:95.1 – Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon

Jadarrius Thibodeaux (age 23, New Iberia, LA):

  • LARS 14:26 – Criminal Conspiracy
  • LARS 14:24-402 – Principal to introduce contraband into penal facility
  • LARS 14:130.1 – Obstruction of Justice

Devonte Stokes (age 27, New Iberia, LA):

  • LARS 14:26 – Criminal Conspiracy
  • LARS 14:24-402 – Principal to introduce contraband into penal facility
  • LARS 14:95.1 – Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
  • LARS 14:108 – Resisting by Flight
  • LARS 14:95.6 C.2 – Firearm Free Zone Violation
  • LARS 14:37 – Aggravated Assault

Travian Jones (age 23, New Iberia, LA):

  • LARS 14:26 – Criminal Conspiracy
  • LARS 14:24-402 – Principal to introduce contraband into penal facility
  • LARS 14:95.1 – Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
  • LARS 14:108 – Resisting by Flight
  • LARS 14:108B – Resisting by False Name
  • LARS 14:95.6 C.2 – Firearm Free Zone Violation

Miaja Curry (age 20, New Iberia, LA):

  • LARS 14:26 – Criminal Conspiracy
  • LARS 14:24-402 – Principal to introduce contraband into penal facility
  • LARS 40:966A.1 – Distribution of SCH I Synthetics

IPSO says that these arrests also resulted in the seizure of 20 grams of synthetic marijuana, 34.5 grams of tobacco and 5 cellular telephones, all destined for Iberia Parish Jail Inmates. Agents also seized an AR-15 and a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol.

All were booked and transported to the Iberia Parish Jail on the above charges.

IPSO adds that from this undercover operation and seizure, it was determined the following Iberia Parish Jail inmates had conspired with the subjects from outside the Iberia Parish Jail to introduce contraband.

Kenneth Landry, Jr. (age 27, New Iberia, LA):

  • LARS RS14:26 – Criminal Conspiracy (2 counts)
  • LARS 14:24-14:402 – Principal to Introduce Contraband (2 counts)
  • LARS 14:118 A.LA -Public Bribery
  • LARS RS14:402 – Possession of Contraband (cellphone)
  • LARS RS14:402 – Possession of Contraband (Sch 1 marijuana)
  • LARS RS14:402 – Possession of Contraband (Sch 1 Synthetics)
  • LARS RS40:982 – Second or Subsequent Offenses

Derrick Mouton (age 24, New Iberia, LA):

  • LARS RS14:26 – Criminal Conspiracy (2 counts)
  • LARS 14:24-14:402 – Principal to Introduce Contraband
  • LARS 14:118 A.LA -Public Bribery
  • LARS RS40:982 – Second or Subsequent Offenses
  • LARS 14:24-40:966 – Principal to Distribute Schedule 1 (synthetics)

Kenneth Washington (age 28, New Orleans, LA):

  • LARS RS14:26 – Criminal Conspiracy (2 counts)
  • LARS 14:24-14:402 – Principal to Introduce Contraband (3 counts)
  • LARS 14:118 A.LA -Public Bribery
  • LARS RS40:982 – Second or Subsequent Offenses
