On Thursday, January 28, local businessman and community leader, Bob Giles, made a donation of bullet proof vests to the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s office

A press conference was held Thursday morning at the sheriff’s office in Ville Platte where the vests were presented to deputies.

“Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line for us by going out to protect the community every day. I consider it an honor and a privilege to be help to protect and save the lives of those officers out their protecting us," said Giles. "It is so important to build a relationship with all parts of the community, I encourage other community leaders to follow in my footsteps."

The donation, according to Giles, is to help outfit the many officers in the Acadiana that go into the line of duty without bullet proof vests.

They say it is estimated that 30 percent of officers killed in shootings would have survived if they had been wearing a bullet proof vest.

This is the second time that Giles has donated bulletproof vests to a law enforcement agency in Acadiana.
