A school crossing guard was struck and killed Thursday morning while directing traffic at an elementary school in Lafourche Parish.

The Sheriff's Office says that 67-year-old Larry Boudreaux was struck while directing traffic on LA Hwy 20 in front of Chackbay Elementary.

According to Sheriff Craig Webre, Boudreaux joined the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office in 2016 and served as a crossing guard at two parish schools during his career. He was also a U.S. Army veteran.

Louisiana State Police are investigating the crash.

The sheriff's office issued the following statement on Boudreaux's death:

"It is with the greatest sorrow and regret that I announced the line of duty death of Larry Boudreaux, one of our dedicated school traffic guards. We are praying for Larry, his wife, and their two daughters during this extremely difficult time."
