An Arnaudville man was arrested on animal creulty charges after police say he was caught on a Ring doorbell camera choking his estranged girlfriend's dog in Slidell.

30-year-old Shane Michael Mitchell was arrested on Tuesday, May 12.

Police say Mitchell allegedly stole the dog, named Rubyjean, and choked her on camera following an argument on Sunday, May 10. Mitchell then reportedly refused to return the dog.

After being notified of the incident, and reviewing video, police say they secured an arrest warrant for Mitchell on a charge of Cruelty to Animals.

Mitchell was located at an apartment complex in Slidell where police say he refused to cooperate with authorities. Police say Mitchell was taken into custody without incident.

The dog was found safe and returned to her rightful owner.

Of the incident Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal said, “I was sick to my stomach watching that video. How someone can do hurt a defenseless animal is beyond me. I had the opportunity to meet Rubyjean this afternoon, and she was as sweet and well-mannered as could be. We are glad this had a happy ending for both the dog and her owner.”

Michtell was held at Slidell City Jail.

Police say an investigation was ongoing and additional charges could follow.
