A Denham Springs man is dead, and his twin jailed, in an overnight crash, State Police say.

Edward Slaven III, 27, died in the crash. His twin brother, Edward Slaven IV, was booked with negligent homicide, negligent injuring, careless operation and driving under suspension in the crash.

The crash happened just after midnight on Sunday, on La. 422 in East Feliciana Parish, troopers sayd.

Slaven IV was driving, with his brother in the front seat and a female passenger in the back seat of a pick-up truck. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle traveled off the road to the right and hit a tree.

Slaven III was not wearing a seat belt and was fatally injured, pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger also wasn't wearing a seat belt and sustained serious injuries. She's at a hospital receiving treatment.

Slaven IV also wasn't wearing a seat belt and he was injured, and transported to a hospital for treatment. After he was cleared by doctors, he was booked into the parish jail.

Impairment is unknown at this time, but a toxicology sample was taken from Slaven IV for analysis. This crash remains under investigation, troopers say.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants in a vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired and always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.
