LWC: Initial unemployment insurance claims rise for week ending June 6

LWC provides guidance to furloughed federal employees in Louisiana

The Louisiana Workforce Commission announced Thursday, June 11, that initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending June 6, 2020 rose to 21,879 from the week ending May 30, 2020.

That's an increase of 2,545 claims.

For a comparison, LWC says that during the week ending June 8, 2019, only 2,818 initial claims were filed.

The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 23,430 from the previous week’s average of 27,991. The unemployment insurance continued claims for the week ending June 6, 2020 increased to 305,083 from the week ending May 30, 2020 total of 301,598. The continued claims were above the comparable figure of 15,358 for the week ending June 8, 2019.

According to LWC, the four-week moving average of continued claims decreased to 315,399 from the previous week’s average of 320,412.

In person and online tools are available through the Louisiana Workforce Commission to help claimants file and process their claims.

In addition, the agency says resources can be found at their 62 local offices statewide. Those resources include job fair opportunities, training programs, apprenticeship opportunities and numerous other LWC services.
