State Senator Page Cortez of Lafayette should be the next state Senate president, according to The Advocate.

The Republican candidate received the necessary 20 votes after candidate Sen. Sharon Hewitt ended her campaign.

Republicans now hold a majority in the Senate, with 26 out of 39 seats.

Cortez should be formally elected to replace the current president in January.
