The Department of Corrections says a fight at Louisiana State Penitentiary resulted in the death of an inmate.
The West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office and the Louisiana Department of Corrections have launched a joint investigation into the death which occurred at around 3:00 pm on Monday August 17.
Officials say that possible criminal charges are pending following the death after the inmate was involved in a fight with his cellmate. The inmate died a short time later at the prison.
The Department of Corrections says that officers making routine rounds discovered the fight. The other inmate involved has been placed in investigative segregation.
An autopsy will be performed this week.
Possible criminal charges are pending the outcome of the investigation and the autopsy. An investigation is ongoing.
