CLAIBORNE PARISH — A lightning strike is to blame for several injured inmates at David Wade Correctional Center in Homer, Louisiana.

The Department of Public Safety and Corrections says the lightning strike happened around 6:00 p.m. Monday September 9, while inmates were playing flag football in the center's yard . Emergency crews transported 10 prisoners to area hospitals following the strike.

One inmate was listed in critical condition while the other nine inmates are in stable condition.

Officials say the lightening strike came without warning and it is David Wade Correctional Center's procedure to clear the yard when potentially dangerous weather approaches.

The names of the inmates or their locations were not released for security purposes.
