Initial unemployment insurance claims drop for week ending January 23

BATON ROUGE – The initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending January 23, 2021 dropped to 12,004 from the week ending January 16, 2021 total of 16,340. For a comparison, during the week ending January 25, 2020, 1,878 initial claims were filed.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 18,552 from the previous week’s average of 17,612.

The unemployment insurance continued claims for the week ending January 23, 2021 increased to 64,916 from the week ending January 16, 2021 total of 63,888. The continued claims were above the comparable figure of 15,500 for the week ending January 25, 2020.

The four-week moving average of continued claims increased to 69,745 from the previous week’s average of 68,677.
