The National Hurricane Center confirmed that Hurricane Delta has officially made landfall near Creole this evening. The center of the storm officially came ashore at 6 p.m., the National Weather Service said.

Now that Delta is on land, it is expected to weaken rapidly, becoming a tropical storm by morning as it heads north.

As of 6 p.m., Delta had top winds of 100 mph, making it a Category 2 hurricane at landfall.

As the hurricane made landfall, a wind gust of 96 mph was measured at the Florida Coastal Monitoring Tower near Lake Arthur.

A water level gauge in Freshwater Canal Locks reported a storm surge of 8 feet.
