A dog was shot and killed by a Houma Police officer after it responded aggressively to a mail carrier, nearly biting her and charging at an officer.
The Houma Police Department says that a mail carrier was chased by a dog and nearly bitten on Thursday afternoon while trying to deliver mail in the 1000 block of Wright Avenue. Police say the dog was acting aggressively and was not on a leash.
Police say the responding officer contacted the victim who said that as she was attempting to flee from the dog she rolled her ankle at which time the dog grabbed her by the shirt. She was able to retreat to safety in her vehicle.
As the officer was attempting to make contact with the owner, Houma Police say the dog came out of the back yard and was aggressively charging towards the officer. They say the officer discharged his weapon striking and killing the dog.
Houma Police say an investigation also revealed that this was not the first time this same dog had aggressively chased residents in the neighborhood.
An investigation is ongoing.
