BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A drunken driver has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally hitting a Louisiana man waiting at a bus stop.

The Advocate reports 40-year-old Ever M. Hernandez was sentenced Tuesday to 15-years for vehicular homicide and 10 years for hit and run, to be served consecutively, in the 2018 death of Eric Joseph.

Baton Rouge police previously said Hernandez drove off the road and hit Joseph while he was waiting for a bus. Hernandez fled the scene. Joseph was hospitalized and died days later. Hernandez had a blood alcohol level of 0.188%.

Hernandez was also ordered to pay $6,500 in restitution.

Judge Beau Higginbotham says Hernandez has been deported twice and didn't have proper documentation when the crash occurred. Higginbotham says this is Hernandez's second drunken driving offense.
