UPDATE: A man who shot a deputy Sunday morning has been fatally shot by officers after a manhunt in a wooded area.
Here's the sheriff's press conference on the incident:
According to posts on the Facebook page of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was trying to stop a motorist who appeared to be falling asleep at the wheel. It happened at about 7 a.m. near the intersection of Airline Highway and Pecue Lane.
The motorist wouldn't pull over, so the deputy followed him to Hoo Shoo Too Road. The suspect fired at the deputy several times through his back windshield, then crashed at the end of Kendalwood Road. He fled into the woods, armed with a rifle, deputies say.
The deputy was injured, but already has been treated and released from a local hospital, deputies say.
EBRSO setup a perimeter at Kendalwood bordered by the Amite River, Ascension Parish and Livingston Parish. Deputies evacuated the few residents living along the border of the perimeter of the sparsely populated area, deputies say.
EBRSO Maritime put a boat on the river and notified the Ascension and Livingston parishes’ Sheriff’s Offices. EBRSO’s Helicopter, K-9 and SWAT responded to the area. Louisiana State Police, Baton Rouge Police, St. George Fire Department, EMS and the EBR Constable also responded. All agencies are currently attempting to locate the suspect believe to be in the wooded area within the perimeter. Please avoid the area, deputies say.
