A Denham Springs High School football player died Friday morning after collapsing at a recent practice.
Remy Hidalgo's mother, Ashley Roberson, shared the news of her son's death in a Facebook post around 4 am on September 18.
Hidalgo was taken to a New Orleans hospital on Tuesday after collapsing near the end of football practice.
According to WBRZ, Hidalgo's family said on Thursday that he was in desperate need of a blood transfusion and that his condition had continued to deteriorate.
A vigil was held Wednesday night at the Denham Springs High School football stadium.
WBRZ says that LSU Coach Ed Orgeron even offered his support that night during a radio interview.
The Advocate says that a spokesperson with Livingston Parish Public Schools confirmed that counselors will be available at the school on Friday for students and faculty.
"Everyone is very saddened by this news. We all were praying and hoping for his recovery. We ask for prayers today for his family and this community as we struggle with the loss of such a special young man," their statement reads.
The Louisiana High School Athletic Association Executive Director, Eddie Bonine, released a statement on Hidalgo's passing.
"The Louisiana High School Athletic Association is sincerely saddened by the passing of Denham Springs High School student-Athlete, Remy Hidalgo. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hidalgo family and friends, the Denham Springs community, and all student-athletes affected by this tragic loss."
