LSU officials have confirmed with WBRZ in Baton Rouge that the number of mumps cases at the university has risen to 16.
The four new cases are apparently all off campus. Last Wednesday, there were 12 confirmed cases. All except one of those cases were in off campus students; the student who lived in an on-campus apartment was quarantined for two weeks.
Officials say all 16 people infected reportedly had the mumps vaccine before contracting the illness.
This comes after a UL student was diagnosed with the contagious disease earlier this week.
University students should have two doses of the MMR vaccine.
Mumps is a contagious viral disease spread through direct contact with saliva or respiratory droplets from an infected person with mumps. It can be spread through sneezing, coughing, or sharing items that may have saliva on them, such as water bottles and cups.
