A Baton Rouge man has been booked in connection with a shooting and carjacking that happened on the Interstate early Tuesday.

Gerry Byrd, 28, was driving toward Mississippi and was injured in an officer-involved shooting, a Baton Rouge Police spokesman said. He's being treated at a Baton Rouge hospital for life-threatening injuries, the spokesman said.

If he recovers, he faces charges in connection with the 2 a.m. shooting of a friend of his.

The 26-year-old woman was found walking on the Interstate near the 10-110 split, the approach to the Mississippi River Bridge. Drivers saw her and called police, and when they caught up to her they found that she had been shot.

The woman had given a ride to a friend, who shot her and forced her out of her vehicle, police said. She is being treated at a Baton Rouge hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, the spokesman said.
