An Avoyelles Parish man was arrested Monday afternoon after deputies say he allegedly set fire to his mother's shed out of anger for not receiving a COVID-19 stimulus check.

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office says 51-year-old Marvin Smith Jr. of Hamburg was arrested April 20, following an investigation.

Deputies say the Moreauville Fire Department responded to the fire around 1:00 pm in the 800 block of Old Highway 1 in the parish.

After assessing the scene, deputies with the SFM determined that the fire was intentionally set and learned that Smith had allegedly gotten into an argument with his mother about the status of his stimulus check moments before the fire.

The State Fire Marshal's Office says that witness statements indicated that Smith was allegedly inside the shed when the fire began and was seen fleeing the area on a recreational vehicle.

Smith was arrested by the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff's Office and was booked on multiple charges including one count Simple Arson.
