Investigators are on the scene of a single-engine airplane crash near Slidell Municipal Airport Wednesday night.

Nola.com reports that other planes alerted authorities to a crash just before 6:30 p.m. Upon arrival, authorities found a large debris field in woods about 200 feet west of the airport. First responders have confirmed at least one person was on the plane when it crashed, and also confirmed at least one fatality.

It wasn't clear whether the plane was landing, passing, or taking off when it went down.

Authorities said in a press conference some individuals from the New Orleans metro area have contacted them and said loved ones on a flight scheduled to land hadn't done so yet, and they could not get in touch with their family members.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Deputies are on scene, along with Acadian Ambulance and several other first responder agencies. A Slidell Police Department officer will be on scene throughout the night while the FAA is en route to the scene.
