State Troopers are investigating a Saturday crash that left an Alexandria woman dead.

The three-vehicle crash happened around 7 p.m. Saturday on La. 1 in Avoyelles Parish, troopers say.

Two pick-up trucks and a four-door sedan were involved in the crash, troopers say. The three vehicles were northbound on La. 1, and one of the trucks began to slow down to turn right into a driveway.

The driver of the car slowed down too, but the driver of the second pick-up, didn't slow down and rear-ended the car, troopers say.

That driver and the car's driver were both transported to the hospital with minor injuries, troopers say. But a passenger in the car, Shirley Reed, 54, was critically injured and later died at the hospital, troopers say.

Toxicology tests were obtained and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers would like to remind the public that inattentive and distracted driving is dangerous and is a leading cause of crashes in our state. Motorists need to pay attention to what is going on outside of the vehicle they are driving.

More information on distracted driving may be found online at nhtsa.gov.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 21 fatal crashes in 2020, resulting in 23 fatalities.
