State Police Troop C says that a 1-year-old died on Wednesday after being struck by a car in Napoleonville.

An investigation revealed that a vehicle traveling east on Jones Street in Napoleonville struck a 1-year-old child who was attempting to cross the street.

State police say the child was trying to follow another group of children who had crossed the roadway ahead of the vehicle.

After being hit, troopers say the child was transported to the Assumption Parish Community Hospital by his mother. The child was later pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

Troopers say that speed is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. The driver provided a breath sample which showed no alcohol present. The driver did not display any signs of impairment, according to troopers.

Both the driver and a front seat passenger were restrained at the time of the crash and were not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
