Two people are dead and five are injured after a driver plowed into a crowd of people in New Orleans.

The incident happened on Esplanade Avenue, less than two miles away from the Krewe of Endymion Parade route. Police say the incident has “nothing to do with Endymion at this time.”

One person was arrested after police say the individual hit eight people, spanning almost three blocks of Esplanade Ave.

Two people were killed. Five people were taken to the hospital. Among the five, three people were transported in critical condition. One person refused EMS and was in stable condition.

At this point of the investigation, police believe all of the victims were on bicycles.

Police say the suspect was apprehended quickly because bystanders initially thought the driver was injured in a one-person crash. When officers and ambulance arrived on scene, police gathered enough information to take the driver into custody in connection with the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
