BATON ROUGE – Two LSU student-athletes have been released by police without arrest following a fatal shooting that happened early Saturday afternoon in East Baton Rouge Parish, The Advocate reports.

University Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva tells the Baton-Rouge based media outlet, “[The athletes] have been involved in a traumatic incident, and we have made our counselors available to assist immediately.”

Officials have not publicly released the names of the student-athletes.

A spokesperson for Baton Rouge police says one person was found fatally shot in the back seat of a truck in the Scotlandville area just after noon.

The two university athletes were said to have called 911 after the shooting and waited at the scene for police.

Attorneys for the players tell The Advocate the shooting happened in self-defense.

The police spokesperson says two guns were recovered from the scene of the shooting.
