Three people were arrested and 12 dogs were rescued following an investigation into a dog fighting operation in Tangipahoa Parish.

Sheriff's Deputies say agents were executing a narcotics search warrant at a home on Marie Drive in Hammond when they discovered the dog fighting ring and operation.

In total, twelve dogs were rescued from the home by the Parish's animal control agency. The dogs, they say, were chained and attached to trees throughout the backyard of the residence.

The search was conducted on January 28 at around 6:30 am.

Deputies say during that search they allegedly found tools used to train dogs to fight and scattered medical supplies. A 10 by 10 wooden box with three foot sides, which the sheriff's office says is commonly used for dog fighting, was also allegedly found on the property.

The owner of the home, identified as 44-year-old Calvin Brown, and two other occupants, 32-year-old Zanobya Abron Brown and Tyler Pines, were arrested on drug and weapons charges along with animal cruelty and dog fighting charges.

"Illegal gambling and drug sales often take place at dogfighting events. Cases of animal cruelty will always be taken seriously in Tangipahoa Parish,” Chief James Travis said in a press release. “When we are made aware of any animal cruelty issues, we do the best we can to investigate and hold those responsible accountable for the suffering they’ve caused these animals."

The sheriff's Office says dogfighting is a felony in all 50 states.
