CONVENT, La. (AP) — A 32-year-old Louisiana man is behind bars, accused of killing his mother and barricading himself inside of a home with his 6-year-old son.

St. James Parish Sheriff Willy Martin Jr. said deputies responded to a shooting in Convent around 4:30 a.m. Thursday, WDSU-TV reported.

Deputies said they discovered the suspect, Carlos Washington, had allegedly shot two people inside the home and barricaded himself inside with his son. Washington shot once at deputies when they tried getting inside and negotiations began shortly thereafter.

During the negotiations, deputies said the suspect came outside with his son while armed with a pistol. They then persuaded Washington to release the child and surrender.

Deputies later found Anita Jacobs, the suspect’s mother, dead inside the home. She had been shot in the head, investigators said. They also said Don Jacobs, the suspect’s stepfather, was shot in the shoulder and taken to the hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

Washington faces a charge of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. Bond was set at $300,000 on the first charge and $200,000 on the other, booking records show. It was unknown if he has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
