ABBEVILLE, La. - Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon held a briefing Friday on COVID-19.

He updated the public on what his office is doing in the fight against the virus and what steps the public can expect from law enforcement.

"Vermilion Parish has started several new programs to help our deputies and the public not get infected with this virus," said Sheriff Couvillon. "We have scaled back our public service to the public hands on. Vermilion Parish residents love to shake hands and hug. We are discouraging that for the time being and doing what the recommendations are."

"We stopped visitors at the jail, we've locked all the doors in the public building with a note and a phone number in the event they do need our services. All they have to is call us."
