NEW ORLEANS — The state government is taking drastic steps to surge medical capacity here and elsewhere across Louisiana.

The Advocate reports that the state plans to put 1,100 beds at the Ernest Morial Convention Center to ease the strain on hospitals in the Crescent City. Meanwhile, medical and nursing schools are considering allowing their senior students to graduate early so they can begin working immediately. LSU Health Shreveport has already announced that it will send its seniors their diplomas electronically next month, one month ahead of their scheduled graduation date.
