Lull of deaths in Lafayette end; COVID-19 case numbers remain steady

A lull in the number of deaths reported for one parish in Acadiana has ended with this weeks updates from the Louisiana Department of health.

Overall 24 new cases were reported in Acadiana with 7 new deaths.

In Lafayette, while a small but steady increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases has been the pattern, on Tuesday the parish saw a spike in deaths reported. 3 new deaths have been added to their total bringing it to 21. On Monday, the parish saw 1 death added. A death had not been reported in the parish for several days going back to April 20.

Three new coronavirus cases were also reported with a total of 446.

Two additional deaths were reported in St. Landry Parish in Tuesday's update. St. Landry remains the parish with the highest total of deaths at 37.

In a breakdown by race in the parish, 29 people identified as white have died, while six people identified as black have died. Parishes with a breakdown by race are only recorded when deaths reach over 25, according to LDH.

Three new cases were also reported in St. Landry Parish.

Iberia Parish has two new cases since Monday's update for a total of 247, they also reported another death on Tuesday bringing the total to 18. They saw a similar pattern last week with one new death reported each day.

The highest case increase is in Calcasieu Parish with 8 new COVID-19 cases reported. One new death was also added.

St. Martin cases are now at 226 which is an increase of three. No new deaths were reported.

Evangeline Parish and St. Mary Parish both saw an increase of cases by one. Evangeline Parish, which has not seen much change over the past weeks, now has 46 cases but deaths remain at zero.

St. Mary Parish has a total of 182 cases with 20 deaths.

Acadia, Jeff Davis, and Vermilion Parishes did not see an increase in Tuesday's numbers.
